Swallowing Problems,
Treated Fast

Food or liquid that sticks, pain when you swallow, or a feeling that something’s caught in your throat? Swallowing problems have many causes, and a few are worth checking promptly. Get same-day, ENT-focused care for swallowing problems, in person or by video.

What are Swallowing Problems?

Swallowing problems, known medically as dysphagia, mean it’s hard, uncomfortable, or painful to move food and liquid from your mouth to your stomach. You might feel food sticking in the throat or chest, cough or choke while eating, or have pain when you swallow (called odynophagia). Causes range from a sore throat or acid reflux to inflammation, narrowing of the swallowing tube, or nerve and muscle issues. Because some causes need prompt evaluation, ongoing or worsening swallowing trouble is worth a visit.

How ENT Urgent Care helps

Swallowing involves the throat, voice box, and the muscles and nerves that move food along, so the cause isn’t always obvious. An ENT-focused exam can look at the throat and swallowing structures and help pinpoint what’s behind it.

During your visit, your provider may review your history, examine your throat and neck, and look at the swallowing structures with a small scope when needed.

Treatment may include:

Virtual or In-Person care?

Choose the care option that fits your symptoms and schedule.
Virtual ENT Care

Virtual ENT care can help review your symptoms, sort through likely causes, and decide how urgently you should be seen.

In-Person Visit

An in-person visit is needed when your provider needs to examine the throat with a scope or arrange swallowing tests, which is common for ongoing or worsening trouble.

When should I worry about trouble swallowing?
Occasional trouble after eating too fast usually isn't a concern. See a provider if swallowing trouble lasts more than a week, keeps getting worse, comes with pain, makes food feel stuck, or leads to coughing, choking, or weight loss. Those patterns deserve evaluation to find the cause.
A lump-in-the-throat feeling (sometimes called globus) can come from acid reflux, postnasal drip, muscle tension, or irritation in the throat. Often nothing is physically stuck. But when the feeling is persistent, comes with real difficulty swallowing, or pairs with weight loss or a neck lump, an ENT exam helps rule out causes that need treatment.
Yes. Reflux can irritate and inflame the throat and esophagus, create a lump-in-the-throat sensation, and over time contribute to narrowing that makes food stick. Treating the reflux frequently improves swallowing. An ENT provider can assess whether reflux is the cause and what else might be involved.
A virtual ENT visit can review your symptoms and help decide how soon and where you should be seen. Ongoing or worsening swallowing trouble usually needs an in-person exam with a scope or a swallow study, so you'd be referred to a partner clinic for that.
