How do I know if my child can't hear or just isn't listening?
This is one of the most common questions parents ask. Some clues that point to hearing rather than attention: not responding even with no background noise, turning the TV up much louder than expected, and not startling at sudden sounds. An ENT exam and hearing test can confirm what's going on.
Most ear infections cause only temporary, mild hearing loss while fluid is present. Repeated infections or fluid that doesn't clear for months can cause longer hearing changes — and can affect speech and learning in young kids. That's why repeated infections or persistent fluid often lead to a conversation about ear tubes.
Hearing testing is possible at every age, including newborns. The type of test changes with age: newborns and babies use objective tests like otoacoustic emissions; toddlers can do play-based audiometry; older kids and teens can do standard audiograms.
