What Is a Pediatric Ear Infection?

A middle ear infection (otitis media) is an inflammation or infection of the small space behind the eardrum, usually caused by bacteria or a virus. In children, ear infections often follow a cold or congestion: fluid backs up behind the eardrum through the eustachian tube and gets infected. Kids’ eustachian tubes are shorter and more horizontal than adults’, which is why ear infections are so common from infancy through early school age.

Symptoms to Watch For in Your Child

Tugging, pulling, or rubbing at one or both ears
Fussiness, crying, or unusual clinginess, especially at night
Trouble sleeping, or waking repeatedly

When to Consider Ear Tubes

If your child has had three or more ear infections in six months, four or more in a year, or fluid that hasn’t cleared after several months, your provider may recommend a conversation about ear tubes (tympanostomy tubes). No. Many children's ear infections improve on their own, especially in older kids with mild symptoms. Pediatric guidelines support "watchful waiting" with pain relief in some cases.
