Pediatric
Allergies

If your child seems to have a cold that never quite goes away, rubs their nose constantly, or has a hard time breathing through their nose at night, it may be allergies rather than another infection. ENT Urgent Care offers same-day pediatric allergy evaluation, treatment, and testing — in person or by video.

What Is a Pediatric Allergies?

Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is the body’s overreaction to harmless triggers like pollen, dust mites, mold, or pet dander. In children, allergies often show up as ongoing congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes, and mouth-breathing — sometimes mistaken for a chronic cold. Untreated childhood allergies can drive recurrent ear infections, sinus infections, snoring, and sleep problems, and can affect school performance.

Symptoms to Watch For in Your Child

Common signs in children include:

A constantly runny or stuffy nose, often without other cold symptoms
Itchy or watery eyes, frequent eye rubbing, or dark circles under the eyes
Repeat sneezing fits or nose-rubbing (sometimes called the "allergic salute")
Mouth-breathing, throat clearing, or symptoms that worsen in certain seasons or places

Not sure if it's allergies, a lingering cold, or something else?

An ENT exam can sort it out and recommend a plan.

How ENT Urgent Care helps

A pediatric-experienced provider will ask about your child’s symptoms, triggers, and how the symptoms affect daily life. They’ll examine the nose, throat, and ears, look for signs of allergic inflammation, and discuss whether allergy testing is the right next step.

Treatment may include:

Virtual or In-Person care?

Choose the care option that fits your symptoms and schedule.
Virtual ENT Care

A virtual visit works well for symptom review, starting allergy medication, and figuring out whether allergy testing is worth doing.

In-Person Visit

An in-person visit is the right call when your provider needs to examine the nose and ears, perform allergy testing, or evaluate symptoms that aren't fitting the usual allergy pattern.

When to Consider Allergy Testing & Treatment

If your child’s allergies are interfering with sleep, school, or daily life, or aren’t well controlled with over-the-counter medication, your provider may recommend formal allergy testing. Once specific triggers are identified, treatment can move beyond symptom relief to long-term control with allergy shots or sublingual drops.

How can I tell if my child has allergies or a cold?
Colds usually last 7 to 10 days and often come with fever, body aches, and yellow or green mucus. Allergies tend to last weeks to months, often without fever, with clear nasal drainage, itchy eyes, and symptoms that flare in certain seasons or environments. An exam can help confirm which one your child is dealing with.
Pediatric allergy testing can be done at almost any age, though results are most useful and reliable from around age 2 and up. If your provider thinks testing will change the plan, they'll discuss the right approach for your child's age.
Some food allergies (milk, egg) are often outgrown. Environmental allergies like pollen, dust, and pet dander tend to be lifelong, though symptoms can change over time. Treatment with allergy shots or drops can reduce sensitivity in some kids over several years.
Most age-appropriate antihistamines and nasal steroid sprays are considered safe for long-term use in children at recommended doses. Your provider can help you choose the right options and review safety with you, especially for younger kids.
