Pediatric
Ear Infection

Children get ear infections more than any other ENT problem, and your child often can’t tell you their ear hurts. They show you instead — tugging at an ear, refusing to eat, waking up crying, or running a fever after a cold. ENT Urgent Care offers same-day pediatric ear infection care, in person or by video.

What Is a Pediatric Ear Infection?

A middle ear infection (otitis media) is an inflammation or infection of the small space behind the eardrum, usually caused by bacteria or a virus. In children, ear infections often follow a cold or congestion: fluid backs up behind the eardrum through the eustachian tube and gets infected. Kids’ eustachian tubes are shorter and more horizontal than adults’, which is why ear infections are so common from infancy through early school age.

Symptoms to Watch For in Your Child

Common signs in children include:

Tugging, pulling, or rubbing at one or both ears
Fussiness, crying, or unusual clinginess, especially at night
Trouble sleeping, or waking repeatedly
Eating or drinking less, or pulling off the bottle or breast

Not sure if it's an ear infection?

An ENT-focused exam can confirm it in minutes.

How ENT Urgent Care helps

A pediatric-experienced ENT provider will look in your child’s ears with a lighted scope, may use tympanometry to check eardrum movement, and will ask about recent colds, allergies, and prior infections.

Treatment may include:

Virtual or In-Person care?

Choose the care option that fits your symptoms and schedule.
Virtual ENT Care

A virtual visit can help with symptom review, parent triage, follow-ups, and starting treatment when your child has had ear infections before and you recognize the pattern.

In-Person Visit

An in-person visit is the right call when your provider needs to look inside the ear, evaluate drainage, or check for an eardrum injury.

When to Consider Ear Tubes

If your child has had three or more ear infections in six months, four or more in a year, or fluid that hasn’t cleared after several months, your provider may recommend a conversation about ear tubes (tympanostomy tubes). Ear tubes are a quick procedure that lets fluid drain and air reach the middle ear, often dropping the infection rate significantly.

How can I tell if my baby has an ear infection?
Babies usually can't point to where it hurts, so watch behavior. Tugging at the ears, fussiness that's worse at night, trouble sleeping, eating less, and fever after a cold are the most common signs. A quick ENT-focused exam is the only reliable way to confirm an ear infection in an infant.
No. Many children's ear infections improve on their own, especially in older kids with mild symptoms. Pediatric guidelines support "watchful waiting" with pain relief in some cases. Younger children, severe symptoms, or both ears affected at once are more likely to need antibiotics. Your provider will recommend the right approach for your child.
Pain usually improves within 1–3 days, whether or not antibiotics are used. Fluid behind the eardrum can linger for weeks after the infection clears, which can cause temporary muffled hearing. If fluid hasn't cleared after several weeks or your child has had repeated infections, ask about a follow-up.
Ear tubes are typically considered after three or more ear infections in six months, four or more in a year, or persistent fluid that's affecting hearing or speech. They're a short outpatient procedure with a quick recovery and often a big drop in infection frequency.
